I can’t hold it back anymore… now that Glitter + Lazers has shared her take on the shopping experience, product quality, and fit of Lula Roe plus-sizes I have to share my own thoughts on what I consider their anti-feminist sales tactics. Let’s set this scene… We live in a rape culture, more women die during pregnancy due to murder (by a family member) than for any other reason, “boys will be boys” but “girls have to be sweet”, on average women are still paid less than men, we’re bombarded by photoshopped images of women until we can’t even remember what a real body looks like, do I need to go on? Well, those facts do go on and on, you just have to be paying attention to the news or your social media feeds to become aware of them, and here’s the thing once you’re aware, once the blinders come off, there’s no going back.
This is where I get to the point… Lula Roe’s package to potential sales reps ties the sales rep into this circus act they call Sales and it’s that Circus act that I have a problem with. I first heard about Lula Roe when a friend of mine got sucked into the craze, she was constantly talking about it online and I wanted to see what it was about. She added me to groups and suddenly I saw that in order to shop I can only do it during a “party” which are limited to specific times, they feature limited product and sizes with no way to order your size in a particular color. If I wanted a pair of leggings in my size in a print that would fit into my wardrobe it would have taken a significant period of time to and effort to find what I wanted. How are women with jobs, or children, or lives supposed to find the time to buy a pair of leggings they like in their size? Well, you just have to give up thinking about important things, reading the news, sharing with friends, all in the name of shopping from a company that’s building it’s popularity by carefully controlling access to product while simultaneously building a cultlike
My daughter was raped in 2014 do you know what the detective said to her? “Well you went home with him, what did you expect?” I can tell you what she expected was that when she said NO it would be respected, and she expected when she went to the police that they’d do something about it, and she didn’t expect for the DA not to pursue the case, or to get the bill for the rape kit that was never tested.
How as a society do we make change? Well, we need to be focused on the issues, speak about them, educate others, and focus our energy on being good examples for our children. But in our society women are being distracted by “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”,
